The previous vaccine will no longer be available so children who started the series with it will finish with the updated vaccine.

Those who have completed the series with the earlier vaccine will be advised to receive a single dose of the updated vaccine if they are less than 6 years of age. This will give them protection against the six other strains of pneumococcus now included.

Side effects of the updated vaccine are usually mild and are similar to those seen with the previous pneumococcal vaccine.
